SER!OUS BEAN CO. Baked Beans

I’ve been chatting a lot lately about the whole flexitarian movement, and there’s no better way to continue my soapbox chatter than showcasing these wicked (and by wicked I mean fk’ing damn good) baked beans. SER!OUS BEAN CO (see what they did with the i there??) has a glorious line of vegan baked beans—which I’ll highlight in another post—and they recently teamed up with the well-known internet sensation and trick shot group, Dude Perfect, to create (insert drumroll) Jalapeño Bacon Baked Beans with mild, Texas-style sweet heat.

“At SER!OUS BEAN CO, we challenge ourselves to think ‘outside the can’ when it comes to our flavors,” said Trey Taylor, the brand’s co-founder. “The Dude Perfect team resonates with so many of the people who love our beans, which is why it made sense to have them help us create a fun, one-of-a-kind flavor.”

Normally people save their baked beans for bbqs and burgers and such, but my favorite man opted to serve them right alongside some spicy fish—and cornbread too, of course. Why? I mean really, why the hell not? Sometimes, when you think outside the box can a little you come up with great, albeit different, taste and texture combinations.

He even keeps a whiteboard in the kitchen with a list of “unusual flavor combinations to try” (yep, I can’t make this stuff up)

And yes, the flavor combinations from SER!OUS BEAN CO are sublime. Note, I don’t eat pork so I didn’t try this particular flavor, but I did try others and OMG about lost my mind with the Southern Mustard Q BBQ Beans … so stay tuned. Next week I’ll post a killer recipe using those, and their Sweet and a Bit Sassy Dr Pepper Baked Beans and their. (And no, I didn’t just eat them straight from the can with pretzels. Really. I didn’t. Wink, wink.)

Southwest-style Fish & Dude Perfect Beans

PREP: 10 minutes | COOK TIME: 10-15 minutes

  • 1 lbs mild, firm fish, cut into 1 to 2-inch cubes depending on your preference
  • 2 jalapenos, cored and diced
  • 2 Tbs olive oil
  • 1 can DudePerfect jalapeno and bacon beans
  • Cilantro for garnish
  • Sour cream, vegan or otherwise, for serving

Heat olive oil in a large pan, saute diced jalapenos for 3-5 minutes over medium heat. Remove cooked jalapeno and set aside, but keep infused oil in the pan. Turn the pan up to medium high then slowly add protein cubes, one at a time. Note, if you’re using fish, try swordfish, tuna, opa or halibut. If you use tempeh, the thickness will likely be closer to ½ to 1 inch so it won’t take quite as long to cook. Cook cubes evenly, using tongs to make sure each side is evenly seared. If you’re cooking fish like Gastro Gabe did here, it should take about 10 minutes total.

Warm beans and dish about ½ cup onto each plate. Place cooked protein on top or directly beside. Sprinkle with cooked jalapeno bits and serve with some fresh cilantro, sour cream and cornbread. Enjoy!
